ARCHAEOLOGICAL UNDERWATER SURVEY ON THE SHORELINE OF ADANA

The first systematic underwater survey on the coast of Adana (Fig. 1) was initiated in 2018.

Scuba diving, sonar surveys and surveys on the shoreline-beaches has conducted during the surveys around Karataş/Magarsus and Yumurtalık/Aigeai ancient harbours and their vicinity, and obtained important data. Ancient cities close to the coastal area in Adana and of course their ports have played a role in many important events in the Eastern Mediterranean for thousands of years. As a result of the archaeological underwater researches carried out in these areas, ships sunk in the open due to the density of ceramic materials that hit the shore, maritime structures built in the coastal areas (dock, pier, breakwater, etc.) and the remains under water as a result of earthquakes / water rises were examined.
